Tomas Ramos Jr. aka “Mazzi” is young man with an ear for music that is far beyond his 24 years. He is one of few true percussionists on today’s urban music scene. His diverse and eclectic sound is intoxicating and additive. With every composition, his drums shake the very foundation of contemporary music while his melodic arrangements resonate to a place in the soul where only a producer of his caliber can go. Mazzi is not only a percussionists, he’s a “beat-smith”, a songwriter, a true musical virtuoso.
Born May 4 1986 in New Brunswick, NJ, Tomas is the eldest of three from Puerto Rico born parents. Early on his parents knew that he was musically gifted. This became apparent when at age 3 he began to play the congas. Salsa music was the music that was played around the Ramos house so naturally young Tomas took to it as he would later do so with every piece of music that came within ear shot. Although he got his start learning to play Afro-Cuban music, this prodigy would go on to master many more percussion instruments and the genre of music that they are predominantly used for. His musical repertoire includes Latino, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Rock, R&B, Pop, Dance etc…, all self taught by the age of twelve and many greats like Hector Lavoe, El Gran Combo, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Stevie Wonder and Curtis Mayfield have influenced Tomas’s music. In eighth grade he started producing music with a little Yamaha keyboard and by his sophomore year at Bound Brook High School, he would join a local rock band as the band’s drummer and backup singer. After graduating from high school, Tomas became the assistant music teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School in New Brunswick, New Jersey and spent two years shaping and guiding the musical talents of others. In 2005 Tomas moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut. Bridgeport offered him the opportunity to work and record in a professional recording studio. There he honed his production skills and even development his vocal talents. Yes, “ya boy” can sing too. While his move to Bridgeport was short live, Tomas would return to New Jersey after one year however, the experience gave him the technical knowhow and confidence to start his own music production company. He would name it Truth Syrum Productions and take on the name of Mazzi for himself.
These days Mazzi can be found working on multiple projects delivering his signature sound to new artist such as rapper Ant Grant and R&B singer Marcus Green. He has also been called upon to provide the musical scores for two up and coming independent films. He has also aligned himself with the highly creative music publishing and management team of Akande Music Publishing and Enterprize Entertainment Group. With his ability to crank out hit after hit and a phenomenal creative team backing him, Mazzi the “producer’s producer” has his sights on big things.
